Our first introduction to the world of machine readable SKU codes, was at Steinberg’s Limited, implementing the very first fixed UPC scanning system in North America. Barriers at that time included vendor compliance, usability, readability and consumer acceptance. These of course are some of the same issues faced by retailers today with RFID technologies.
Just as the benefits to both Retailer and consumer were made evident with the UPC, so too will the RFID ultimately become a standard coding approach. It is not a matter of “if”, but of “when”.
